Jack got up from his stool, feeling shaky, perplexed. For nearly an hour he’d been sitting there watching Didge twitch and shiver and scrabble the tabletop with her fingers; he’d been listening to her moan and sob and click her teeth and cry out. But now—now she was still. And quiet. Her breathing easy, and measured. And when he touched her—there was no seething heat.

She felt … cool.

Whatever torment she’d gone through had passed.

Suddenly. Quite suddenly.

He shook his head, glanced toward the dreamerie door, looked back at Didge.

(Who’d been his life.)

(Once.)

Leaning down, he kissed her on the temple, lightly, then straightened up and started to leave.

He stopped, though, when he heard her laugh: a loud, clear, trilling laugh. Turning back to the table, he watched her, still unconscious, extend a hand, her left, and make a fist, and shake it, then fling it open.

As though—

As though she were playing a game of Could.

He grinned, and nearly went back to her side, tried to wake her—but then he frowned and rushed out the door and shut it, and the world ended behind him.

Because he was a Walker, and a Walker was a ghost of flesh and blood and vitals and bone.
